Portland Mills was built in 1870 and it has been referred to as a "pioneer landmark" in the early history books of Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.
James T Graham built the mill in 1870 with a pick and shovel. It took weeks to tunnel through the limestone to the river edge.
In 1925, Portland Mills had a significant fire and the floors and roof were burned out.
A special project is underway to raise the roof and preserve the heritage of this important early Iowa historical landmark. It is considered a historical places in Iowa's pioneer settlement records.
